Interlux Reducing Solvent Spray 2316N is a fast-evaporating spray reducer formulated for selected Interlux two-part polyurethane and epoxy coatings. It is the designated spray reducer for Perfection and Perfection Varnish / Perfection Plus, reducing viscosity and improving atomization when these coatings are spray-applied. It is not a general-purpose paint thinner it is for two-part systems that specifically call for 2316N.

Not sure which reducer your coating needs? Check the technical data sheet or label for the specific paint, varnish, or primer you are applying. Different Interlux products call for different reducing solvents, and using the wrong one can affect flow, atomization, and cure.

Intended Use

  • Reducing viscosity of Interlux Perfection for spray application
  • Reducing Perfection Varnish / Perfection Plus for spray application
  • Thinning compatible two-part polyurethane coatings where 2316N is specified
  • Reducing compatible Interlux epoxy coatings for spray application
  • Compatibility testing Interlux uses 2316N to evaluate whether an existing coating can accept a two-part polyurethane system

Compatibility Notice

2316N is not interchangeable with other Interlux solvents. Other products in the Interlux solvent range serve different purposes:

  • 2333N Reducing Solvent Brush (brush application of compatible two-part products)
  • Special Thinner 216 fast-evaporating thinner for conventional coatings, antifouling, and varnish preparation
  • 333 Brushing Liquid (brush flow improver for one-part coatings)
  • 202 Fiberglass Solvent Wash (surface preparation solvent)

Always follow the technical data sheet or label for the coating you are applying.

When to Use 2316N

  • A compatible two-part coating requires reduction for spray application
  • Perfection or Perfection Varnish needs improved spray viscosity
  • The coating label or TDS specifically calls for Reducing Solvent Spray 2316N
  • Faster evaporation is needed during spray application conditions

Related Products

  • Interlux Special Thinner 216 INT-216-QT for conventional coatings, antifouling, and varnish prep
  • Interlux Special Thinner 216 Quart (94-216QTCA) Canadian catalog reference

Application Notes

  • Confirm the coating specifically permits 2316N before adding
  • Follow the coating manufacturers recommended reduction percentage do not over-thin
  • Add reducer gradually while mixing to reach the desired viscosity
  • Use appropriate spray equipment for the two-part coating system
  • Maintain adequate ventilation at all times
  • Keep away from heat, sparks, and ignition sources
  • Wear solvent-resistant gloves and eye protection
  • Refer to the Interlux safety data sheet (SDS) for full handling requirements

Parts Desk Insights

Most common customer issue: Confusing 2316N with 2333N, or using Special Thinner 216 on a two-part coating that calls for a specific reducing solvent. The key distinction: 2316N is the spray reducer for Perfection and compatible two-part systems; 2333N is the brush reducer for the same product family. Using the wrong reducer affects atomization, flow, and cure and can ruin a finish. If youre unsure which product your coating requires, check the Interlux TDS for that specific product before opening anything.

Best use case: Ideal for finishing professionals and boat owners spray-applying Interlux Perfection or Perfection Varnish, or any two-part polyurethane topside coating in the Interlux range that specifies 2316N. A quart is sufficient for reducing moderate volumes of coating for single-session spray application.
