Anode Material Note

This is an aluminum anode, not zinc. Aluminum anodes are the preferred choice for saltwater and brackish-water use, and are also suitable for freshwater. If your vessel operates exclusively in freshwater, confirm whether magnesium anodes are specified. Match the anode material to your operating environment and the Volvo Penta recommendation for your drive.

Compatible Applications

Fitment is drive-model and serial-number specific. Confirm 3863193 against your drive model, serial number, and the applicable Volvo Penta anode diagram before ordering.

Serial Number Fitment Notice

Volvo Penta sterndrive models can use different anodes depending on drive version and production date. Confirm the drive model, ratio designation, and serial number before ordering. Do not select by appearance alone anode shape and mounting can vary across otherwise similar drives.

Service Interval

Inspect anodes at every haul-out or annual service, and replace when the anode is more than 50% depleted. Boats left in the water for extended periods, operated in high-salinity environments, or moored near stray-current sources will deplete anodes faster and require more frequent inspection. A fully depleted anode leaves the drive unprotected.

When This Part Needs Replacement

  • Anode is more than 50% consumed or missing entirely
  • Anode surface is heavily pitted, chalky, or crumbling
  • Annual service or haul-out replace as a matter of routine
  • Visible corrosion appearing on nearby drive components inspect immediately
  • After grounding or impact that may have dislodged or damaged the anode

Installation Notes

Clean the mounting surface of old anode material and corrosion before fitting the new anode. Ensure firm contact between the anode and the drive housing for effective electrical bonding paint, sealant, or debris between the anode and mount will reduce or eliminate protection. Do not paint over the anode. Torque fasteners to the specification in the Volvo Penta service manual.

Inspect related anode positions on the drive, trim tab, and transom while access is available replacing all anodes at the same service prevents mixed depletion rates.

Parts Desk Insight

The most common mistake with anode service is waiting too long by the time the anode is fully gone, the drive has likely been unprotected for part of the season. Inspect at every haul-out and replace anything past 50% depletion without hesitation. The second common issue is poor contact: if the anode isnt making solid metal-to-metal contact with the drive housing, it isnt working regardless of how new it is. Clean the mounting surface properly before installation.
